CICRA - Children with Crohn's and Colitis
CICRA is the only UK registered charity formed solely to support the ever increasing number of children and young adults with Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease – IBD) and their families. When the charity was formed in 1978 there were no paediatricians specialising in Crohn’s and Colitis in children so CICRA set up a Fellowship Scheme and many of the leading doctors treating children and young people throughout the UK today have had their specialist training through this scheme. CICRA continues to offer this opportunity to young doctors wishing to specialise in gastroenterology.
To support the families CICRA offers literature, telephone help, a ‘Can’t Wait’ toilet card, an E-Pal scheme for children and parents and organises family IBD information days in all regions of the UK. This gives families, children and young adults the opportunity to ‘meet the specialists’ in small discussion groups and importantly for children and young people to be able to mix with others in their own age group.
CICRA also supports other peer reviewed medical and scientific research, through three further funding streams, aimed at finding more effective treatments and an eventual cure for Crohn’s and Colitis
