Wyndham Park Nursery School

WPNS logo

Wyndham Park Nursery School is the only Local Authority maintained nursery school in Grantham with fully qualified Teachers and Teaching Assistants who are specialists in early education.

We are committed to ensuring that children are academically, emotionally and socially ‘primary school ready’ when they leave us.  Our highly qualified staff use a range of teaching strategies as well as encouraging the children to learn through play to make sure every child reaches their full potential during their time with us.  We are extremely proud of our latest Ofsted report (May 2019) which stated: ‘This school continues to be outstanding.  The vision for excellence for early years children is clear for all to see in the quality of provision at Wyndham Park Nursery School.’

The school was purpose built in 1998 and overlooks park land. The building comprises two indoor teaching areas and outside there is a large teaching area, which is fenced and gated for the safety of the child.

Description

Special educational needs are described by the Special Education Needs Code of Practice as falling into four areas. These are:

 Communication and interaction

 Cognition and learning

 Behaviour, emotional and social development

 Sensory and/or physical.

In our Nursery school we make provision for pupils who have a variety of different needs. We know that some pupils will have difficulties in more than one of these areas and we will always do our best to meet their needs. The actual support will be based on the specific needs of each pupil. This can include a variety of adaptions including changes to the physical environment, changes to teaching styles as well as levels of adult support.

We aim to meet the needs of the majority of children within the mainstream nursery classes whilst recognising that some children may have special educational needs that require staff to adapt the learning environment and their teaching. We know that some pupils may have difficulties in more than one area and we will always do our best to meet their needs. The things we do vary and actual support will be based on the specific needs of each pupil.

As well as specific support for identified children, we offer generalised support within nursery. If your child has difficulty with producing speech sounds, he/she may spend individual time with a suitably trained member of staff. Alternatively he/she may join a group focusing on the understanding and use of language or a nurture group aimed at encouraging social skills. Our nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. We place a high emphasis on learning through routines and through high quality play experiences.

Our nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.  We place a high emphasis on learning through routines and through high quality play experiences.  Teachers and Teaching Assistants are on hand to teach and to guide and we recognise the importance of fostering and raising self-esteem.  Strategies to encourage positive behaviour are used and our children are expected to use “kind hands” and to share and take turns.  The class team will observe and note your child’s strengths and interests.  Their views and feelings will be interpreted through these observations as well as through sensitive dialogue with your child.  All staff will take time to listen to children and issues will be addressed through stories and picture books and if necessary by social stories which will focus on specific concerns.

Experience

All staff will be encouraged to take advantage of in-service training courses and programmes in order to develop and extend their knowledge and expertise with regard to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. If a child enters with a specific medical need, staff undergo the relevant training to ensure their needs can be safely met.
