Caring2Learn

Partners in Practice, Putting children first

Caring2Learn is a Lincolnshire County Council research project, funded and supported by the Department for Education through the Partners in Practice programme.

The overall aim of the project is to improve a wide range of outcomes for Lincolnshire's looked after, post-looked after and other vulnerable children and young people.  We want all Lincolnshire education settings to be confident in nurturing vulnerable children and young people so they achieve better than expected progress and we want carers, foster carers and residential care workers, to champion education in the home.

We want all our looked after children and young people to feel safe and to belong in their home and school, which will provide them with a solid foundation to have the confidence to go on to learn, be aspirational and achieve their full potential.

The project aims to:

  • Improve the learning outcomes for all Lincolnshire looked after, post-looked after and other vulnerable children through knowledgeable Care and Learning communities in which our children and young people feel safe and believe they belong;
  • Upskill and support our Carers and Educators to help them better support children and young people, in and out of their education setting, to improve learning outcomes;
  • Promote wellbeing and emotional stability in all vulnerable children as indicated through improved Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) or Boxhall scores;
  • Encourage active participation in education and improve the attendance of Lincolnshire looked after, post-looked after and other vulnerable children;
  • Reduce the number of fixed-term and permanent exclusions of vulnerable children by creating more effective and nurturing learning environments, policies and procedures which meet the needs of individuals;
  • Have fewer Post-16 looked after young people in Lincolnshire who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) by promoting higher aspiration and self-esteem

Our key priorities are to:

  • Embed effective multi-agency working and relationships between relevant children's service area and the care and education communities;
  • Develop a sustainable learning and support network for education settings and carers based around localities, led by hub schools of excellence and Education Champions;
  • Develop a team of foster carer and care home Education Champions to support, advise and challenge all carers across the county;
  • Highlight, celebrate and drive good practice across the county by creating and implementing the Caring Schools Learning Homes Award aimed at all carers and education settings;
  • Develop annual events and an ongoing training package to support, upskill, promote and celebrate all participants in the Caring2Learn programme;
  • Work with experts in the field of promoting achievement for looked after children, in partnership with the UCL Institute of Education's Thomas Coram Research Unit.
