A Nursery Unit of Independent School is a nursery that is part of a private or voluntary organisations with an independent school (private school).  They offer early education sessions to prepare your child for primary school.

A Nursery Unit of Independent School will be registered with Ofsted and inspected by them however, they may fall under the same Ofsted registration as the school.  If there is a particular independent nursery unit you are interested in you can ask the nursery to view or have a copy their last inspection or download a copy from the Ofsted Website.

Cost of a Nursery Unit

Each nursery set their own prices.  This can change depending on setting's policy as they may offer different prices for different ages or having more then one child at the nursery.  Some independent nurseries will offer 2, 3 and 4 year old funding.  This is something you will need to confirm with the nursery.

If you need help with childcare costs, you may benefit from schemes such as:

  • Tax Credit/Universal Credit - You may be eligible for certain tax credits or universal credit if your family has a low income;
  • Childcare Voucher - Your employer may offer the childcare vouchers scheme which allows you to have your money diverted from your salary before you get it and before it is taxed.  Check with your employer to see if they offer this.
