3. What are Day Nurseries?

A day nursery can provide full day care for children from birth to 4 years, but each day nursery may set their own age ranges.  Most day nurseries will have separate rooms for each age group with staff and equipment in the rooms best suited to develop your child's learning.

Ofsted

Day nurseries are Ofsted registered with routine inspections.  If you are interested in a particular day nursery and you want to know more about their inspections, you can ask the nursery for a copy of their latest inspection report or download it from the Ofsted Website.

Cost of Day Nursery

A day nursery can set their own price and this may be different depending on the age group.  Most day nurseries offer free childcare for 2, 3 and 4 year olds, however this will need to be checked with the day nursery.

If you need help with childcare costs, you may benefit from schemes such as:

  • Tax Credit/Universal Credit - You may be eligible for certain tax credits or universal credit if your family has a low income;
  • Childcare Voucher - your employer may offer the childcare vouchers scheme which allows you to have your money diverted from your salary before you get it and before it is taxed. Check with your employer to see if they offer this.
